While the outlook for riding during the winter period is typically grim in the UK, the turn of the new year is an exciting time as most motorcycle manufacturers choose to unveil and launch their newest motorcycles. State-of-the-art adventure motorcycles with thrilling signature Triple engines, innovative progressive technology and equipment, commanding rider ergonomics, and agile neutral handling; every Tiger is built with maximum capability to take you everywhere in style, comfort and control.

A lot of people automatically think of the big GS 1200, KTM Adventure, Triumph Tiger Explorer, Yamaha's Super Teneré and similar as adventure choices, and they are all amazing machines. With 85hp, 60 lb-ft of torque and boasting a respectable top speed of 130 mph, the BMW is great fun on the roads but it's even more fun in the dirt.

Don't confuse a gravel and adventure bike with an endurance road bike like the Cannondale Synapse or Saracen Avro. A rule of thumb that most riders will agree with is, if you frequent the rough stuff, the lighter the better. A smooth powerful bike is set up for taller riders over 5ft 10″ (hint get thicker soles on your boots if you cant flat foot on one side).

It's not particularly great off-road if you're not an experienced bush whacker. Long travel front suspension and an adjustable monoshock at the rear will give the XPulse decent off-road capability. From this essential starting point, we designed our double sweep roll: adventure bar, positioning the rider in a relaxed endurance oriented position.

When your road suddenly turns to muddy ruts it's often enough to make some riders turn around and head back the other way. These motorcycles are usually heavier and more durable than the models derived from off-road motorcycles. Typical lightweight adventure bikes normally weigh in at sub 140 kg (fuelled without gear).

Most new adventure riders, without a significant off-road riding background, will find a smaller displacement adventure bike less intimidating and more fun to learn on. For those that do decide to go straight to a big bike, it's best to take an off-road training course that specializes in adventure bikes.

A lot of off-road gear focuses more on breathability or the ability to wick away moisture. The expensive wr250r bikes tend to be heavier and more specialized, and their performance and weight are often intimidating for new adventure riders. A carbon fibre frame and fork keep the weight low and, as we'd expect from an adventure bike, the head angle is slacker than that of a road bike.

But top of the priority list would be proper off-road tyres: the dual purpose' tyres fitted as standard are too road orientated. With only 5.5 inches of travel in the front and 4.7 inches in the rear,it's really more of a street bike with adventure styling. Communication devices allow you to stay in touch with other riders in your party.
